Our Prepare Work Zone Traffic Management Plan course – formerly known as the Red Card – is the nationally recognised qualification you need to design, modify, and assess Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGS).

Delivered in Newcastle by local trainers with real-world industry experience, this course meets all SafeWork NSW requirements and ensures you’re ready to take on high-responsibility roles in traffic management planning and site risk assessment.

This training is for those who need to carry out preliminary risk assessments, interpret traffic control requirements, and create compliant TMPs/TGSs for roadwork sites. This course does not qualify participants to control traffic with a stop/slow bat or set up signs and devices on site.

Who is this course for?

This course is recommended for experienced traffic controllers, site supervisors, and infrastructure project managers involved in the planning and documentation of road safety and worksite management strategies.

This course is ideal for experienced traffic control personnel, site supervisors, project managers, or those working in infrastructure and construction who are responsible for designing or modifying TMPs/TGSs.

About The Course

Participants will learn to design and modify traffic control plans in accordance with SafeWork NSW and local road authority requirements. This includes practical use of traffic planning software, stakeholder communication, and compliance documentation.

There are no formal prerequisites, but experience in traffic control and working knowledge of Traffic Control Plans is strongly recommended.

Students will also need:

• A Unique Student Identifier (USI). To create or find your USI number please go tothe USI website and follow the instructions
• To be able to provide 100 points of ID - please refer to the100 points of ID sheet for acceptable forms of id. Note that if it's not on the sheet it cannot be used.

What is the PWZ/Traffic Management Designer course?

This two-day training program builds advanced capability in developing Traffic Management Plans (TMP) and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGS). It does not qualify participants to physically control traffic (i.e. stop/slow bat or boom gates)-that’s a separate credential.

Students will learn to:

• Prepare and design Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs)
• Assess site conditions, road layout, traffic density, and risk factors
• Calculate signage spacing, barrier placement, and lane closures
• Understand traffic density, vehicle types, road layouts, and stakeholder communication
• Use TMP design software and industry documentation to produce compliant plans
• Identify required approvals and stakeholder notifications (including utility, council, and event access)
• Review concurrent works and planned events affecting road use
• Collect project-specific data (traffic volume, road conditions, stakeholder needs)
• Incorporate site mapping, pedestrian/vehicle plans, signage spacing, clearances, environmental management & costings

Class Size

Maximum class size is limited to 12 participants. Public courses require a minimum of 6 participants to proceed. We will notify students at least one week in advance if a course needs to be rescheduled due to low enrolments.

Course Requirements

There are no formal training package or training pre-requisites, however it is highly recommended that participants have prior experience in traffic control and in implementing traffic control plans.

Age Requirements

Participants must be at least 17 years of age to enrol in this course.

Literacy Requirements

• Effective language, literacy, and numeracy skills are required.
• If you need additional assistance or accessibility adjustments, please contact us before booking.
• Intermediate computer skills are required, including the ability to navigate software applications.

Outcome/Qualifications

123 Training Solutions conduct PWZ courses in partnership with and on behalf of Commonsense Safety Training (RTO code 41347). Commonsense Safety Training is not CRICOS Registered. For information on privacy see their Privacy Notice.

Successful students will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency:

• RIIRIS402E – Carry out the risk management process
• RIICWD503E – Prepare traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes

Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment for the above units, and your training will be logged toward obtaining your SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Work Training (TCWT) card.

FAQs

• Do I need to be traffic controller qualified first?
  No, but prior PWZ applicants usually have traffic control experience that benefits their training.
• Can I work on site right after training?
  Yes - your Statement of Completion lets you work under supervision up to 90 days, while awaiting your card.
• What TMP software do you use?
  We train with Road Manager or similar mainstream TMP/TGS tools to ready you for modern workflows.

Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy

To support fair scheduling and course access for all participants, the following per person fees apply to cancellations and rescheduling requests:

• 7 or more days before the course: No fee for cancellations or rescheduling.
• Less than 7 days before the course: $150 fee for cancellations or rescheduling.
• Less than 48 hours before the course: $300 fee for cancellations or rescheduling.

Course Catch-Up

• This course has a limited capacity. If you miss a training day and need to attend another course to complete your training, a $300 catch-up fee will apply, as this takes up a place in another course that would otherwise be available to another participant.

No-Show Policy

• Participants who do not attend without prior notice will forfeit their enrollment fee.

Refunds will be issued for eligible cancellations, minus any applicable fees.
